Only one year removed from earning the franchises first ever NBA championship, the Dallas Mavericks have been working furiously towards improving their roster in the hopes of once again returning to the NBA Finals. The 2012 NBA off-season had many executives league wide trying to land the two largest free agent prizes, point guard Deron Williams and center Dwight Howard. While the Howard saga has yet to be decided (while the rest of us have honestly stopped caring) Williams is one of the elite point guards in the NBA today and the fact that he grew up in Texas made the Mavericks one of the early favorites to land him. Unfortunately for Dallas they did not sign him as Williams opted to return to the Brooklyn Nets.
Many Maverick fans were upset by their favorite teams inability to land the superstar they have so greatly wanted to join Dirk Nowitzki throughout his tenure in Dallas although since losing out on Williams Dallas has made a series of great off-season deals that on paper make them one of the best teams in the Western Conference. This began when they traded Lamar Odom to the Clippers and in doing so opened up the Mavs spending options. They first acquired Chris Kaman who has proven to be a reliable and consistent big men throughout his career as well as having chemistry with Nowitzki due to the fact that they both play for the German national team. Dallas then went on to perform a sign and trade deal in which they sent Ian Mahinmi to Indiana for Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones who are both solid guards with Collison having more potential among the two.
The Mavericks followed up these two moves with perhaps the two best signings of role players among all NBA teams in 2012. First, they claimed Elton Brand off of waivers for approximately 2.1 million dollars. Brand at one time dominated the NBA comparable to great power forwards like Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan and he showed us last season for Philadelphia that he still has a significant amount of playing ahead of him despite being plagued by injuries earlier in his career. He should be a great back up to Dirk and could even play along side him in certain rotations as a center. After losing their sixth man Jason Terry to the Boston Celtics in free agency Dallas decided they needed a new young shooting guard to build around. They got just what they asked for by signing O.J. Mayo to a 2-year deal. Mayo was one of the highest recruited high school basketball players in the nation and after only playing one season at USC entered the NBA Draft. In fact, he was drafted #3 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves who traded the rights to him and others for Kevin Love. Obviously, Mayo has not attained the level of dominance that Love has however many basketball fans believe that in the right system Mayo could flourish and easily average over 20 points a game.
