Passion, Pain, & Purpose
Passion, Pain, and Purpose, these three words are an integral, intertwined and essential ingredient to success. As a former basketball player who participated in the prestigious Nike Invitational Jamboree Camp and presently an aspiring coach who work and coach high school students during summer basketball camps, one thing seems constant and that is every student athlete is searching for success. When approached by my campers who are seeking success, I introduce them to the three Ps. Passion; do you love what you do so much, that you would do it for free? Pain: are you willing to put in the hard work and endure the ups, downs and disappointments? Purpose; why are you doing what you are doing?
At some point and time in life we are challenged with trying to figure out how to become successful. Society's standards and its definition of success seem determined by the status of our jobs and how much money we make. Although success is a subjective term, I have an interpreted description of success that may help others when pursuing their dreams. It seems to me, success stems from being at peace and serenity with one's inner self. Furthermore, your life purpose should stem directly from your passion. One's passion serves as a vehicle not only to makes you successful, but also to make an impactful impression on the lives of others! In my opinion, discovering your purpose in life deals with and is founded on the internal passion, which lay dormant inside many of us. I would think that we all are passionate about something in our lives, however figuring out how to draw upon and to manifest our passion may be a difficult task. Ask yourself the following, what is the one thing that is always on your mind? Is there an occupation or career path that you would pursue even if you knew you weren't going to get paid to perform it? As mentioned above, the three Ps are intertwined and are all essential to success. Therefore, once you have discovered your passion you must be willing to endure pain.
Sometimes your passion and purpose are a direct result of pain whether physical or mental. Pain does not always convey a bad thing! It can be that motivating factor in life to get you focused on your road to success. Do not get deterred or give up because of disappointments and closed doors in life. That very same thing that you worked hard for and put your blood sweat and tears into will turn into a blessing if you continue to work at it. Maybe your purpose isn't to become the next LeBron James. However, maybe your purpose is to be the coach of the next LeBron James. Even though you may have worked just as hard as he did at your craft, don't let that pain of not achieving that specific goal get you off track. Let your pain produce a passion that will birth another dream or that may help someone else to achieve their goal. Learn how to redirect your dreams if they aren't turning out the way you envisioned them. Ask yourself the following question; are you willing to endure the hard work, ups and downs and disappointments to attain success? Figure out how to turn your pain into passion and your passion into purpose.
I've come up with a few questions that have helped me discover my purpose through passion and pain that may help you as well. What is the one thing that is always on your mind? What do you love to do in your spare time? What would you take up as a career even if you knew you wouldn't get paid to do it? Your answer to these questions is your passion. It seems to me that many people aren't courageous enough to take that leap of faith and pursue their dreams. They choose to play it safe and pursue careers that are guaranteed to make them money even if they have to sacrifice their happiness. These people usually seem to end up living life with remorse, hating their jobs, and regretting not chasing their dreams. Through my experiences as a collegiate basketball player and as an aspiring college basketball coach, I've learned that pain can be a blessing in disguise. What may first seem like a disappointment can turn into an opportunity of a lifetime and lead you to a purposeful and prosperous career by simply ensuing your passion. Figure out a way to turn your passion into a career path because as I have often heard, when you do what you love to do, you will never work a day in your life!
