What Will Kobe Bryant Do After His Contract Runs Out?

At the time of this article's publication, Kobe Bryant is with Team USA in pursuit of a gold medal at the London Olympics. The 2012 version of the Dream Team looks like it is well on its way to achieving this goal, but a pressing question lurks in the woodworks. What will Kobe Bryant do after his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers runs out after two years?
Kobe has been with the Lakers since he was 17 years old. He has played close to 16 years for the same team and is considered one of the most important figures in Los Angeles sports history. The man is a living legend and it's almost imaginable to think of Kagel vietnam lua dao
obe playing for another team. When his contract expires in two years, he will be 35 years old. He says he wants to retire as a Laker, but will he really? What are his options when his contract runs out?
Most people think that Kobe will retire in two years and will not resign with any other team. If this is the case, then Kobe will retire having 5 or more NBA championships, a former NBA MVP, at least a 14 time All-Star, and the all-time Lakers scoring champion. For such a legendary organization, that is quite an accomplishment to brag about. However, Kobe lives, breathes, and eats basketball. This guy lives in the gym and is so focused and passionate that it's really hard for me to believe that he can simply walk away from the game in just two years. I don't think Kobe knows what else to do if he's not focusing on basketball.
If he's not going to retire, what will he do? Some people speculate that Kobe could sign with another team, but I think this is really unlikely. I feel like Kobe has a fierce loyalty towards the Lakers, and I think the Lakers feel the same way about Kobe. If he played for another NBA team, it would greatly diminish his legacy. It feels like Kobe wants to be remembered as an athlete who spent his entire career with one team.
One possibility that has been thrown around is Kobe possibly playing in Europe for a few years as a type of "farewell tour" after his NBA career. Perhaps this will be a way for Kobe to wean himself off of basketball when his body can't take the rigors of NBA anymore. Besides, Kobe is an extremely worldly person and is very popular overseas. He speaks both Italian and Spanish and enjoys spending time in Europe. Whichever team is willing to sign him would probably offer him a ton of money, considering most European clubs are not hindered by a salary cap. Because of the money and his fondness for Europe, I can really see Kobe doing this in the future, but I don't think he will do this. Not quite yet. I think Kobe still thinks he can play in an exceptionally high level and he will feel like he left the NBA too early if he retires in only two years.
I don't think Kobe would feel comfortable leaving the NBA so soon, and I don't think he would ever play for another team. He will probably work some deal out with the Lakers and sign a new deal. It will probably be for significantly less cash, but it will still be large enough to reflect Kobe's importance to the organization. Kobe will be playing with 36 year old Steve Nash, and Kobe will probably think he can copy the old man and play at an incredibly high level until he is pushing 40. Truth be told, I think Kobe would meet this challenge. He will probably be a fear and respected player for another 10 years if he decides to modify his style. Perhaps he can come off the bench, or have a last minute assassin role such like Robert Horry. He could have 10 titles before he retires. It would certainly be fun to watch.
