What is Shannon Brown's vertical leap? The dynamic shooting guard from the Suns (my favorite team, by the way) has a vertical jump of 44.5 inches.
Even though he is only 6'3, he has been known to do some massive throwdowns during his 10 year career as a member of the Cavs, Bulls, Bobcats, Lakers and (currently) Suns.
How long has he been dunking?
According to the man himself, he has been able to dunk since his freshman year in high school.
So where does he get his crazy hops from?
Believe it or not, Shannon Brown doesn't do any jump training (except for jumping during practice and games). According to the man himself, he doesn't do any weight training at all.
In other words, it is mostly generics.
Of course, the other factor is that he's been practicing jumping aggressively for a LONG TIME. That does make a big difference.
So what can you take away from this?
There are 2 things.
#1) Jump aggressively
No matter what sport you play, the key to jumping higher is to... JUMP. A lot.
In other words, when you go play basketball, practice jumping aggressively when rebounding. Jump high when going in for a layup (or dunking, if you can). Jump high when shooting.
You will be amazed at how much you increase your vertical with this simple strategy. How do you improve your jump shot? By shooting a lot. Just the same, you improve your vertical by jumping frequently.
#2) Use plyometrics training
Plyometrics are the most effective strategy for improving your vertical, because they most closely mimic the jumping motion.
Does weight training increase vertical?
Yes, but it is so different than the jumping motion that it is not the most effective way to improve your vertical. In other words, being able to squat 400-500 pounds does not guarantee you a 40 inch vertical.
On the other hand, plyometrics is ALL about jumping. It targets the muscles that are responsible for jumping, and it works them out in the same way they would be exercised during a basketball game. This is why plyos are so superior to weight training, and are the best exercises to jump higher.
Conclusion
So if you want to have a Shannon Brown vertical leap, you need to do 2 things-use a good plyometrics program, and practice jumping aggressively when playing.
That's it? For the most part, yes. There are other things you can do to improve yourself, such as stretching frequently, using certain shoes to help you jump higher, and watching your diet. However, these 2 will make the BIGGEST difference.
